Mon Jun 3023:15Andrew Heaney Gets Back in Win Column
Pittsburgh Pirates starting pitcher Andrew Heaney did not allow a run over 6 2/3 innings in his team's 7-0 home win against the St. Louis Cardinals. The veteran scattered three hits, walked one, and struck out seven to notch his fourth victory (4-7) in 17 starts. Heaney had a no-hitter going through five innings and allowed no runs in an outing for the third time this season, but first since Apr. 23. It was a nice bounce-back effort after letting 15 runs cross the plate over his last two appearances. He was due for some regression, and it hit him hard, considering he held a 2.91 ERA at the end of May. Heaney sits at 4.16 now, to go along with a 1.20 WHIP. He'll carry those metrics into his next trip to the mound -- a road meeting with the Seattle Mariners this weekend.

Thu Jun 1219:05Andrew Heaney Cleared to Start on Thursday
Pittsburgh Pirates left-hander Andrew Heaney (calf) is making the start on Thursday against the division-rival Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field after experiencing cramping in his left calf in his last start on Saturday against the Philadelphia Phillies. Heaney took a no-decision in that outing despite allowing only one earned run with no walks and five strikeouts in six innings pitched. Despite only fanning 52 in 72 1/3 innings pitched through his first 13 starts of the 2025 season, Heaney has been a solid free-agent pickup for Pittsburgh, posting a 3.24 ERA and 1.15 WHIP. Under the hood, the analytics show that Heaney is due for some serious regression to the mean with a 4.70 xERA and 4.38 FIP, in addition to an xwOBA of .348. Against one of the best offenses in baseball on the road, we wouldn't recommend using Heaney in starting fantasy lineups on Thursday.

Sat Jun 720:29Andrew Heaney Removed Early With Calf Cramping
MLB.com's Alex Stumpf reports that Pittsburgh Pirates left-hander Andrew Heaney (calf) left his start early on Saturday against the visiting Philadelphia Phillies at PNC Park with left-calf cramping. The good news is that he had a quality start for his fantasy managers in a no-decision, going six innings and giving up just one run on four hits while walking none and striking out five before departing. The lone run he allowed was to left-handed slugger Kyle Schwarber in the first inning. It's possible that the 34-year-old veteran southpaw will have to miss his next start, but if it's indeed just cramping, he should be able to avoid a stint on the 15-day injured list. Heaney lacks strikeout upside (6.4 K/9) and is due for regression (4.45 FIP), but he has been a decent fantasy streamer this year despite his low ceiling, and he now owns a 3.24 ERA through 13 starts for the Bucs.

Tue May 2700:25Andrew Heaney Allows Two Homers In Monday's Loss
Pittsburgh Pirates starting pitcher Andrew Heaney did not have his best stuff in Monday's 5-0 loss to the Diamondbacks. Heaney pitched five innings, allowing five runs on eight hits (including a solo home run and a two-run HR) and three walks with two strikeouts. Despite the lackluster performance, the 33-year-old has put together a decent season, going 3-4 with a 3.41 ERA, a 1.22 WHIP, and a 6.53 K/9 rate in 11 starts and 60 2/3 IP. Heaney's next matchup will be a tougher one at the Padres. While his ERA and WHIP have been fine, Heaney has not offered a lot of strikeout upside, limiting his appeal in tougher matchups like his next one. At this point, he could conservatively be started in middling or favorable matchups.

Thu Apr 2400:58Andrew Heaney Tosses Six Shutout Innings
Pittsburgh Pirates starting pitcher Andrew Heaney picked up the win and fired six scoreless innings against the Angels in a 3-0 victory on Wednesday. He struck out nine and only allowed one hit. This was his second straight scoreless outing, and his ERA on the season is now down to 1.72 with 31 strikeouts compared to only six walks in 31 innings pitched. He looked truly dominant in this start, inducing 24 whiffs on the night for an elite 46% whiff rate. However, it's hard to fully trust Heaney going forward, no matter how good he looks in any given start. He's shown flashes like this in every one of his more recent seasons, and still finished with an ERA above 4.00 in 2024 and 2023.

Thu Apr 1720:54Andrew Heaney Blanks The Nationals For Series Sweep
Pittsburgh Pirates left-hander Andrew Heaney had a nice bounce-back outing on Thursday to help sweep the visiting Washington Nationals at PNC Park, tossing 7 1/3 scoreless innings with five hits allowed, two walks and four strikeouts to win his first game of the season in a 1-0 ball game. It wasn't an eye-popping stat line when all was said and done, but Heaney induced a lot of weak contact and was efficient while throwing 95 pitches. The 33-year-old southpaw let up four earned runs in six innings in a loss to the Cincinnati Reds his last time out, but outside of that outing he's been strong in his first season in Pittsburgh. Heaney's strong effort on Thursday lowered his season ERA to 2.13 with 22 strikeouts and six walks in his first 25 1/3 innings pitched. While he shouldn't be counted on as a big strikeout guy, Heaney can continue to be a productive fantasy streamer in the right matchups.

Thu Feb 2019:21Andrew Heaney Signs One-Year Deal With Pittsburgh
Left-handed pitcher Andrew Heaney signed a one-year contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates worth $5 million. Heaney spent the 2024 campaign with the Texas Rangers. The southpaw logged 160 innings and held a 4.28 ERA and a 1.25 WHIP. He tallied 159 punchouts. He also showed solid command as he allowed walks at a 5.9 percent rate. However, he generated a 4.46 xERA and a .253 xBA, which suggests he may face some regression when he returns to the mound. During the 2023 campaign, Heaney posted a similar 4.15 ERA and a 1.38 WHIP across 147 1/3 innings. Fantasy managers should expect Heaney to compete for one of the final spots in the rotation. Heaney will likely provide rotational depth and could eventually shift to the bullpen. If he earns a spot in the rotation, he could have value as a streaming option in deeper formats in favorable matchups.

Mon Dec 9 202414:28Tigers Interested In Andrew Heaney
The Detroit Tigers have interest in starting pitchers who are candidates for one-year deals this offseason, which includes left-hander Andrew Heaney and right-hander Kyle Gibson. President of baseball operations Scott Harris tried to sign Heaney in November of 2021 when he was the general managers of the San Francisco Giants. In the last two seasons with the Texas Rangers, Heaney has posted a 4.22 ERA with 310 strikeouts over 307 1/3 frames. Another player Detroit could be watching is right-hander Michael Soroka, who had a 4.74 ERA with 84 K's and 44 walks over 79 2/3 innings in 25 games (nine starts) for the Chicago White Sox in 2024. In his final 11 games in relief, Soroka was stellar with a 1.84 ERA, 41 K's and only nine walks in 24 1/3 frames. Because free-agent right-hander Nick Pivetta would require forfeiting draft picks, the Tigers are unlikely to pursue him.

Fri Apr 19 202414:26Andrew Heaney Aiming To Go Deeper Friday
Texas Rangers left-hander Andrew Heaney will be looking to get deeper into Friday's contest against the hosting Atlanta Braves. The veteran went just 3 2/3 innings and threw 79 pitches in that time in his last start at Houston, allowing two earned runs and four walks in that time. Heaney has pitched just 12 innings through his first three starts, maxing out at 4 2/3 frames in his first start of the season against Tampa Bay. The 32-year-old has been roughed up for a 6.75 ERA on the young season and sports a tiny 5.1% K-BB%, as well. Heaney is in danger of losing his rotation spot with Max Scherzer likely returning in May while the club also recently called up right-hander Jack Leiter who started Thursday's game against the Tigers.

Mon Nov 6 202313:19Andrew Heaney Will Be Back With Rangers In 2024
Texas Rangers left-hander Andrew Heaney exercised his $13 million player option for the 2024 season and will be back in Texas next year. Heaney was a big part of the Rangers' pitching staff this year on their way to their first-ever World Series championship. The 32-year-old southpaw appeared in five games (three starts) in the playoffs and allowed five earned runs on 11 hits while walking four and striking out four in 11 innings pitched. During the regular season (his first in Texas), he went 10-6 with a 4.15 ERA (4.66 FIP) and 1.38 WHIP while walking 60 and striking out 151 in 147 1/3 innings over 34 appearances (28 starts). Heaney should enter his second year with the Rangers as a back-end starter in their rotation.

Tue Oct 31 202300:31Andrew Heaney Gets The Nod For Game 4 Against Arizona
Texas Rangers left-hander Andrew Heaney has been named the starter for Game 4 of the World Series against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday. The Rangers were initially expected to use right-hander Jon Gray as the Game 4 starter, but those plans were scrapped after he threw three shutout innings for the win in Game 3 on Monday night when starter Max Scherzer left after three innings with a back spasm. Heaney allowed a hit in two-thirds of an inning in Game 2 of the series on Saturday. He's made two starts and worked twice out of the bullpen in the playoffs, allowing four earned runs on seven hits while walking two and fanning just one in six innings. The 32-year-old southpaw made one regular-season start against Arizona back on May 3 and picked up a no-decision after allowing six earned runs while walking four and striking out five in 4 2/3 frames.

Thu Oct 19 202319:41Jose Altuve Aiming To Sustain Success Versus Andrew Heaney In Game 4
Houston Astros second baseman Jose Altuve will look to keep his career-long success versus Andrew Heaney going in Thursday's Game 4 of the ALCS versus the Texas Rangers. Altuve has largely struggled this postseason but did break out with a homer and an additional base hit in Wednesday's Game 3 8-4 victory. However, the veteran is seemingly in a fantastic spot against a pitcher he has seen plenty of in Game 4. Altuve is a career 12-for-37 (.324) hitter against Heaney with three doubles, a pair of homers, and a walk across 38 career plate appearances against the southpaw. The Astros will look to even the ALCS at two games apiece Thursday against a pitcher in Heaney who has pitched just 3 2/3 innings since Sept. 30.

Thu Oct 19 202313:19Andrew Heaney Starting Game 4 Of ALCS
Texas Rangers left-hander Andrew Heaney is starting Game 4 of the American League Championship Series on Thursday against the division-rival Houston Astros. In just his second career postseason appearance in Game 1 of the ALDS in Baltimore against the Orioles, Heaney picked up a no-decision by allowing just an earned run on two hits while walking one and striking out one in 3 2/3 innings of work. He's probably not going to have a long leash in this one as the Rangers look to take a commanding three games to one lead in the best-of-seven series. In four starts against Houston during the regular season, the 32-year-old southpaw allowed six earned runs in 19 2/3 innings (2.75 ERA) while walking 11 and striking out 16.

Fri Oct 6 202322:24Andrew Heaney To Start Game 1 Of ALDS For Rangers
The Texas Rangers will roll with left-hander Andrew Heaney for Game 1 of the American League Division Series on Saturday in Baltimore against the Orioles. Fellow left-hander Jordan Montgomery will be on the hill for Game 2 on Sunday. It was expected that right-hander Dane Dunning would get the nod for Game 1 of the ALDS, but it will instead go to the 32-year-old Heaney against a lefty-heavy top half of Baltimore's lineup. Heaney only started two games in September, with his last outing being a shutout performance in a start against the Mariners on Sept. 30 in which he went 4 1/3 innings while striking out two. Both of his starts against the O's were in the first two months of the year and he was roughed up to the tune of a 7.45 ERA with three walks and five strikeouts in 9 2/3 innings pitched. Heaney will be a risky DFS streamer on Saturday.

Sat Sep 30 202311:03Andrew Heaney Taking The Ball On Saturday
Texas Rangers left-hander Andrew Heaney is getting the nod for Saturday's start against the Seattle Mariners. Heaney has worked out of the bullpen for most of September and he just tossed 17 pitches on Thursday, but the Rangers may need him in the rotation going forward with Jon Gray (forearm) hitting the injured list Friday. The numbers aren't pretty for the southpaw in his recent career against the M's, showing a dodgy 7.04 ERA in his last five starts (30 innings). Fantasy managers would probably be wise to bench Heaney in most cases.

Tue Sep 26 202312:10Andrew Heaney Has Scoreless Relief Outing Monday
In the team's 5-1 win over the Los Angeles Angels on Monday night, Texas Rangers left-hander Andrew Heaney threw 1 1/3 scoreless innings in relief, not allowing a single hit and also not walking or striking out a batter. Heaney has shifted to more of a long-relief role for the Rangers in the final month of the regular season, but he may be needed back in the starting rotation before long, depending on the severity of right-hander Jon Gray's wrist injury that he suffered on Monday. The 32-year-old southpaw has made 32 appearances (27 starts) for Texas in 2023, going 10-6 with a 4.31 ERA (4.73 FIP), 1.38 WHIP, 58 walks and 147 strikeouts in 142 innings pitched in his first year with the team.

Thu Aug 24 202318:33Andrew Heaney Tries To Right The Ship Against Twins
The Texas Rangers and starting pitcher Andrew Heaney aim to snap the team's six-game losing streak when they commence a four-game set with the Minnesota Twins on Thursday. The 32-year-old has been awfully inconsistent this season, failing to reach the fifth inning in both of his previous starts and ultimately compiling a 4.27 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 122 strikeouts in 118 innings overall. Heaney may very well have a decent opportunity to get back on track in this one against Minnesota, who the southpaw displays a 1.96 ERA with 20 punchouts in 18 1/3 frames opposing since 2021. Heaney can be an erratic fantasy play, but his K upside makes him worth a gamble for season-long managers against a Twins team that has struck out more times than any other club in 2023.

Sun Aug 13 202311:07Andrew Heaney’s Start Shortened By Illness Saturday
Texas Rangers starting pitcher Andrew Heaney (illness) was apparently limited during Saturday's start against the San Francisco Giants due to an illness. The 32-year-old only logged four outs before being pulled after 40 pitches, giving up one run on three hits and two walks with one strikeout. Rangers manager Bruce Bochy disclosed after the game that Heaney came down with a cold and missed his bullpen session earlier this week as reasoning for the short leash. Fantasy managers should view Heaney's Saturday showing to be a blip on the radar, and he should be fine for his next scheduled start on Friday versus the Milwaukee Brewers. The erratic southpaw owns a 4.17 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, and 119:47 K:BB through 114.1 innings this season.

Sun May 21 202319:35Andrew Heaney Has Success On Sunday
Texas Rangers starting pitcher Andrew Heaney seemingly had no problems versus the Colorado Rockies on Sunday. The left-hander went six innings, allowing only one unearned run with five strikeouts in the 13-3 victory. This marks three straight quality starts for the 31-year-old southpaw. To be fair, the last two games were versus the Seattle Mariners and Oakland Athletics. It'll be interesting to see if Heaney continues to have success versus the Baltimore Orioles in his next start.

Sun May 14 202309:35Andrew Heaney Seeking Consistency Against Athletics
Texas Rangers starting pitcher Andrew Heaney draws an exploitable matchup with the Oakland Athletics on Sunday. The 31-year-old holds an uneven 5.25 ERA, able to sacrifice two runs or fewer in just three of his initial seven starts. He's arguably the best streaming option on Sunday's slate, regardless, in shallow fantasy leagues that he may not already be rostered in. Heaney opposes an inexperienced Athletics lineup which has been shut out six times already in 2023. The southpaw is only 3-4 in his career against Oakland, though, logging a mediocre ERA of 4.30 with 65 strikeouts in 58.2 innings. This shouldn't discourage fantasy managers from playing him against the A's in season-long leagues or targeting him in DFS contests.
