Mon May 1215:25Keider Montero Likely To Be Called Up To Start On Tuesday
Detroit Tigers right-hander Keider Montero has a locker room in the team's clubhouse on Monday and is likely to be recalled from Triple-A Toledo to start Tuesday's game against the visiting Boston Red Sox at Comerica Park. It looks like Montero is going to take the starting rotation spot with right-hander Casey Mize (hamstring) currently injured. Although the matchup for his next spot start on Tuesday won't be the greatest -- the Red Sox currently rank sixth in MLB with a .745 OPS -- Montero will still be an interesting fantasy streamer after his last strong outing for the Tigers. The 24-year-old Venezuelan hurler picked up his first win of the year on May 8 in the second game of a doubleheader against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field by throwing eight innings of one-run ball while walking three and striking out two. He has an ERA of 4.15 in his four big-league starts this year with 15 strikeouts in 21 2/3 innings.

Sat May 1010:10Keider Montero Sent Back To Minors After Spot Start
The Detroit Tigers optioned right-hander Keider Montero back to Triple-A Toledo on Friday after his spot start during the team's doubleheader in Colorado against the Rockies on Thursday. Montero was excellent against the last-place Rockies at hitter-friendly Coors Field in the second game of the twin bill, allowing just one earned run on five hits while walking three and striking out two in eight innings for his first win of 2025. The 24-year-old will go back to the farm for now, but he'll surely be back up in the big leagues when the Tigers need another starter, especially after that strong performance. The good outing lowered his ERA to 4.15 on the season and his WHIP to 1.48 WHIP through 21 2/3 innings and four starts. Montero has flashed some high-end potential through his first 120 innings after debuting in 2024, but he's also been very inconsistent with a below-average 18.2% strikeout rate.

Mon Apr 2822:02Keider Montero Sent Back To Minors
The Detroit Tigers sent right-hander Keider Montero back to Triple-A Toledo on Sunday after his spot start in a doubleheader on Saturday against the Baltimore Orioles. In his third start of the year over the weekend, Montero gave up only one earned run on four hits while walking two and striking out two in 4 1/3 innings for a no-decision. It was the 24-year-old's best start of the season against a tough opponent, but he'll now head back to the farm to serve as rotation depth for the big-league squad. Montero fanned eight hitters in five innings in his season debut on April 16 against the Milwaukee Brewers but also allowed five earned runs. He has so far been up and down in three starts in 2025 after going 6-6 with a 4.76 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 77:31 K:BB in 98 1/3 innings in his rookie year in 2024. Montero will be a streamer for those in AL-only leagues if/when he makes another start in Detroit.

Mon Apr 2116:15Keider Montero Starting On Monday Against Padres
With the Detroit Tigers currently using a six-man starting rotation during a busy stretch of their schedule, right-hander Keider Montero will make his second start of the season for Monday's series opener against the San Diego Padres at Comerica Park. He will be on a standard four days of rest after making his season debut last Wednesday against the Milwaukee Brewers, when he allowed five earned runs on eight hits (three homers) while walking one and striking out eight in five innings in a loss. Montero will be facing an even weaker Padres lineup with first baseman Luis Arraez (concussion) heading to the injured list, but he'll still be a shaky DFS streamer after his subpar performance last week. The 24-year-old's command location will continue to be a primary focus after he struggled with both last Wednesday. It's a good bet that Montero will head back to Triple-A Toledo after Monday's outing.

Tue Apr 1523:01Keider Montero To Start On Wednesday Against Milwaukee
Detroit Tigers right-hander Keider Montero is with the team in Milwaukee and will make the start on Wednesday at American Family Field. Nobody else in the starting rotation is hurt, but manager A.J. Hinch wants to push the rotation back a day during a 23-game, 24-day stretch of games. The 24-year-old Montero will be making his first big-league start of the year for the Tigers after going 6-6 with a 4.76 ERA (5.15 FIP) and 1.33 WHIP with 77 strikeouts and 31 walks in 19 outings (16 starts) over 98 1/3 innings in his rookie season in 2024. The Venezuelan hurler started the year off at Triple-A Toledo by giving up three earned runs on six hits while walking only one and striking out 11 in 9 2/3 inning in his two starts with the Mud Hens. Montero has high-end potential but didn't strike out that many a year ago and was unsurprisingly inconsistent. He'll be a pretty shaky fantasy streamer in Milwaukee.

Sun Feb 914:25Keider Montero Could Operate In Swing Role
According to Jason Beck of MLB.com, Detroit Tigers right-handed pitcher Keider Montero could be deployed out of the rotation and the bullpen during the 2025 season. Beck noted that while Montero will report to camp as a starter, but he may find a role in the bullpen, given the recent signing of Jack Flaherty. With Flaherty, Tarik Skubal, Reese Olson, and Alex Cobb penciled into the rotation, that leaves just one spot for Montero and several other arms, such as top prospect Jackson Jobe, Matt Manning, Casey Mize, and Kenta Maeda. Last season, Montero posted a 4.76 ERA with a 1.33 WHIP across 98 1/3 innings. He struck out 77 batters and held a modest 7.7 percent walk rate. Under the hood, he generated a poor 5.24 xERA, which suggests he may face some regression this season. Montero should only be targeted in deeper AL-only formats if given a spot start during the season.

Wed Oct 9 202412:11Keider Montero Starting Game 3 For Tigers
Detroit Tigers rookie right-hander Keider Montero will take the ball for Game 3 of the American League Division Series on Wednesday at Comerica Park against the division-rival Cleveland Guardians with the series tied one game apiece. In his first MLB season in 2024, Montero went 6-6 with a 4.76 ERA (5.15 FIP) and 1.33 WHIP with 77 strikeouts and 31 walks in 98 1/3 innings pitched over 19 appearances (16 starts). His playoff debut came in Game 1 of the ALDS on Saturday out of the bullpen, when he tossed two scoreless innings while walking none and striking out three. Montero started against Cleveland back on July 8 in Detroit and tossed 6 1/3 shutout innings on three hits while walking one and striking out four. However, Montero hasn't started since Sept. 25 and is likely to have a very short leash in this pivotal game against the Guardians.

Sat Oct 5 202412:13Casey Mize Left Off ALDS Roster, Keider Montero Included
The Detroit Tigers left right-hander Casey Mize off the roster for the American League Division Series against the division-rival Cleveland Guardians and included rookie right-hander Keider Montero instead. Mize missed more time with injury in 2024 and finished the regular season in the bullpen after making 20 of his 22 appearances on the year in a starting role. The 27-year-old former first overall pick in 2018 out of Auburn wasn't good in his two relief outings and went 2-6 overall with a 4.49 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and just 78 strikeouts in 102 1/3 total innings. Montero wasn't all that much better in his first MLB season, going 6-6 with a 4.76 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 77:31 K:BB in 19 outings (16 starts) over 98 1/3 innings. He wasn't included on the roster for the Wild-Card Series but did throw 6 1/3 shutout innings against Cleveland back on July 8. Montero will most likely be used in a long-relief role.

Wed Sep 11 202400:08Keider Montero Fires Complete-Game Shutout Tuesday
Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Keider Montero was on his game in Tuesday's 11-0 win over the Rockies. Montero took advantage of a favorable matchup inside his home park, tossing a complete-game shutout with three hits, no walks, and five strikeouts. The 24-year-old's season numbers leave something to be desired but he has pitched better in the second half. Specifically, he has gone 4-2 with a 3.69 ERA in eight starts from August onward. He will face a much tougher matchup in his next start against the Orioles. While he has pitched better, fantasy managers may not want to risk starting him in such a tough matchup so deep into the season.

Wed Aug 7 202409:10Keider Montero Racks Up Eight K's
Detroit Tigers rookie starting pitcher Keider Montero put together his best start of his big-league career on Tuesday versus the Seattle Mariners. Making his eighth start of his big-league career, the 24-year-old tossed six scoreless innings and allowed four hits, one hit, one run and eight strikeouts. The eight strikeouts would be a career-high for Montero. Although it was an encouraging outing for Montero, managers should temper their expectation moving forward as he still has a 5.62 ERA over nine outings (eight starts). Montero will look to keep the positive trend going when in his next matchup on the road against the San Francisco Giants. For now, he can be left on the waiver wire.

Thu Jul 4 202408:45Keider Montero Nabs First Victory
Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Keider Montero threw 6 1/3 innings versus the Twins and allowed six hits, two runs, one walk and struck out four to earn his first big-league victory on Wednesday. It was his best performance as a big leaguer by a landslide, in his third appearance as he replaced starting pitcher Casey Mize (hamstring) in the rotation. Montero is the Tigers seventh ranked prospect per MLB Pipeline and is expected to remain in the rotation with Mize on the shelf. Despite his strong performance on Wednesday, Montero figures to be more of a streamer in favorable matchups. Montero is projected to face the Cleveland Guardians his next time out and can be avoided in that contest.

Wed Jul 3 202418:14Keider Montero Starting On Wednesday
Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Keider Montero has been recalled ahead of Wednesday's game against the Minnesota Twins. The 23-year-old will slide into the rotation with Casey Mize (hamstring) heading to the injured list. Montero has already made two appearances with the Tigers this season. Neither of them went overly well considering he holds an ugly 9.45 ERA across 8 2/3 innings. Montero won't be a recommended streaming option ahead of Wednesday's game.

Tue Jul 2 202412:30Keider Montero Likely To Join The Tigers
Detroit Tigers pitching prospect Keider Montero was scheduled to start for Triple-A Toledo on Monday night before he was a late scratch. The Mud Hens went with a bullpen game instead. Meanwhile, right-hander Casey Mize (hamstring) will be placed on the 15-day injured list a left-hamstring strain, according to manager A.J. Hinch, so Montero figures to be the one to replace him in the Tigers' starting rotation through the All-Star break in mid-July. Montero, the club's No. 7 prospect per MLB Pipeline, struggled in his first 8 2/3 innings earlier this year in the majors, allowing nine earned runs on 10 hits while walking four and striking out 11 in two appearances (one start). The 23-year-old's second big-league start figures to come this weekend on the road in Cincinnati against the Reds. Montero features high spin rates on his breaking pitches but will need to control them and limit the homers to find success at the next level.UPDATE: Montero is scheduled to start on Wednesday against the Minnesota Twins.

Thu May 30 202409:13Keider Montero Demoted After Making Debut
After making his big-league debut in Game 2 of Wednesday's doubleheader, the Detroit Tigers have sent pitching prospect Keider Montero back to Triple-A Toledo. It was an expected move for the club's No. 7 prospect, according to MLB.com. Montero worked 4 1/3 innings in his debut and was a bag of mixed results. Montero recorded five strikeouts, but also allowed five hits, four runs and one walk. Montero, 23, remains a bright spot on the farm for the Tigers, but will need an injury or two to make an impact at the big-league level in 2024. Montero can safely remain on the waiver wire.

Tue May 28 202422:21Keider Montero Coming Up For Wednesday's Doubleheader
According to a source, the Detroit Tigers are calling up pitching prospect Keider Montero from Triple-A Toledo to be the 27th man on Wednesday for their doubleheader against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Nothing is official yet, but it looks like Detroit's No. 7 prospect, per MLB Pipeline, will make his major-league debut on Wednesday in a spot start in one of the games of a doubleheader after Tuesday's contest in Pittsburgh was rained out. Montero is getting his first major-league call-up after going 0-1 with a 4.40 ERA and 1.47 WHIP with 17 walks and 36 strikeouts over 30 2/3 innings and nine starts for Toledo. The 23-year-old Venezuelan hurler can spin the ball with the best of them, but his struggles to control his secondary pitches and his vulnerability to the long ball will make him a risky fantasy streaming option in his MLB debut. And there's a good chance he'll be sent back to Toledo after Wednesday's game.
