Tue Jun 320:07Reese Olson Receives Injection, Will Play Catch on Thursday
Detroit Tigers right-hander Reese Olson (finger) received an injection on Tuesday to treat the remaining inflammation in his right ring finger and will resume playing catch on Thursday, according to the Detroit News' Chris McCosky. It's unknown when Olson will be ready to return from the 15-day injured list after landing on the shelf on May 19 with his finger injury. He still needs to get back up on a mound, though, which means Olson probably won't be back in Detroit's starting rotation for at least another couple weeks, even if he foregoes a minor-league rehab assignment. In the meantime, pitching prospect Sawyer Gipson-Long will return from Tommy John and hip surgeries to start on Wednesday versus the Chicago White Sox. Olson was in the midst of his best season as a pro before his injury, going 4-3 with a 2.96 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 51:19 K:BB in nine starts for Detroit.

Fri May 3019:23Reese Olson to Throw Bullpen Session on Saturday
Detroit Tigers right-hander Reese Olson (finger) will throw a bullpen session Saturday as he works back from inflammation in his ring finger, per Chris McCosky of the Detroit News. The Tigers placed Olson on the 15-day injured list on May 19. That temporarily paused a terrific start to 2025 for the 25-year-old, who has gone 4-3 with a 2.96 ERA (2.93 FIP) and 51 strikeouts against 19 walks over 48 2/3 innings. It appears he's on track to rejoin the Tigers' rotation in short order.

Tue May 2023:14Reese Olson Diagnosed With Mild Finger Inflammation
Detroit Tigers right-hander Reese Olson (finger) received multiple opinions and was diagnosed with mild inflammation in his ring finger. Olson will be re-evaluated later this week to see if he can resume throwing. The Tigers placed the 25-year-old on the 15-day injured list on Monday with his finger injury, but he could be ready to return to the team's starting rotation when he's eligible to come off the IL on June 2. Olson deserves to be stashed by fantasy managers while he's on the mend. He threw six scoreless innings in his last start against the Toronto Blue Jays last Saturday and has a pristine 1.60 ERA, 0.95 WHIP, 38 strikeouts and 11 walks in 33 2/3 innings in his last six starts. Overall, Olson has gone 4-3 this year for the Tigers with a 2.96 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 51 punchouts in 48 2/3 frames over his nine starts.

Mon May 1919:08Reese Olson Goes on Injured List With Finger Injury
The Detroit Tigers placed right-hander Reese Olson (finger) on the 15-day injured list on Monday with a right ring-finger injury and recalled right-hander Chase Lee from the minors in a corresponding move, according to The Detroit News' Chris McCosky. It's bad news for the Tigers and fantasy managers for a pitcher that has been lights-out of late, and it's unclear if he'll be ready to return from the IL when he's eligible on June 2. The 25-year-old threw six shutout innings with only one hit allowed, one walk and six strikeouts in a no-decision his last time out on Saturday against the Toronto Blue Jays. Olson has been outstanding in his last six starts, posting a 1.60 ERA and 0.95 WHIP with 38 punchouts and 11 walks over 33 2/3 frames. Fantasy managers will want to hang onto him while he recovers. McCosky writes that the Tigers will go with a bullpen game on Wednesday against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Mon May 509:48Reese Olson Deals On Sunday Against The Angels
Detroit Tigers right-hander Reese Olson got his fourth win of the season (4-2) after the Tigers pounced all over the Angels on Sunday to win 13-1 and take three out of four games in the series against the Halos. Olson pitched with the lead most of the afternoon and was sharp through his 5 innings of work, only allowing three hits, three walks, and striking out eight. Although the three walks are a bit concerning, overall, it was an excellent afternoon for Olson as his season ERA now sits at 3.03. Over his last four outings, Olson owns a 1.14 ERA, 0.93 WHIP, and 27:9 K: BB over 23.2 innings. Next up for Olson is a home matchup against the Rangers. The Rangers' bats have struggled lately, so fantasy managers can continue to roll out Olson confidently.

Thu Apr 2400:30Reese Olson Strikes Out Seven In Win
Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Reese Olson earned his third win of the season on Wednesday, pitching 7 scoreless innings while striking out seven. He allowed just two hits and one walk. This was his second straight scoreless outing, and it lowered his ERA to 3.29 on the year. It was especially encouraging to see him record 22 outs on the night, as this was his fourth start of his career that has lasted seven innings or longer. He'll look to carry this momentum into his next start, currently lined up against the Astros.

Thu Apr 1723:53Reese Olson Tosses Five Scoreless Innings
Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Reese Olson earned the win in a solid outing on Thursday, throwing five scoreless innings in a 6-1 victory over the Royals. He allowed four hits and two walks while striking out five. This start lowered his season ERA to 4.50, and he'll look to carry this momentum into his next start which is currently scheduled to be against the Padres. He was very reliable in 2024 with an ERA of 3.53, and this start was a step in that direction.

Thu Oct 10 202416:02Reese Olson Starting Game 4 For Tigers
Detroit Tigers right-hander Reese Olson will make the start for the team in Game 4 of the American League Division Series on Thursday at Comerica Park against the division-rival Cleveland Guardians. Olson will be hoping to pitch well enough to win and send the Tigers to the AL Championship Series. In his first playoff start in Game 1 on Saturday, Olson pitched well, allowing only a solo home run while walking one and striking out four in five innings of work against Cleveland. In two regular-season starts against the Guardians, he allowed five runs (four earned) on seven hits (one homer) while walking three and striking out seven in 12 innings of work. Olson's home/road splits in 2024 were pretty similar, so he doesn't look to have a big advantage pitching at home. Overall, he went 4-8 with a 3.53 ERA, a 1.18 WHIP and 101 strikeouts in 112 1/3 innings across 22 starts.

Mon Sep 16 202418:13Reese Olson Activated, Starting On Monday
Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Reese Olson (shoulder) will make his return to the mound against the Kansas City Royals on Monday. The right-hander has been sidelined the last eight weeks while recovering from a shoulder strain. Olson won't get an easy task for his first game back with a matchup against a tough Royals team. However, Olson has held his own with a 3.23 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, and 92 strikeouts across 18 starts this season. It's uncertain if he'll be a full-go for his first game back, but he'll be worth starting in season long formats on Monday.

Fri Sep 13 202419:47Reese Olson Could Return Next Week
Detroit Tigers right-hander Reese Olson (shoulder) is trending towards returning from the injured list to pitch in the series next week against the division-rival Kansas City Royals that runs from Monday, Sept. 16, through Wednesday, Sept. 18. Left-hander Tarik Skubal (hand) is already projected to start on Wednesday, so Olson's turn would come either on Monday or Tuesday. An official announcement could come on Saturday. The 25-year-old has been out since July 20 but did toss three scoreless innings with five strikeouts in his latest minor-league rehab start on Tuesday with Triple-A Toledo. Olson's strikeout rate has been a bit down this year, but you can't argue with his results (3.23 ERA, 1.18 WHIP) in 19 starts before hurting his shoulder. He has streaming appeal down the stretch, although a matchup next week against KC will probably make fantasy managers nervous.

Tue Sep 10 202423:32Reese Olson Tosses Three Scoreless Innings In Second Rehab Start
Detroit Tigers right-hander Reese Olson (shoulder) tossed three scoreless innings (45 total pitches in his second minor-league rehab start on Tuesday with Triple-A Toledo, and he will now rejoin the Tigers to be evaluated. "We'll determine what's next for him. It could be another start in Triple-A, or another plan. We haven't seen him in 10 days, so I'd like to sit down and see how he feels," manager A.J. Hinch said. The 25-year-old could probably use at least one more rehab start to build his arm back up, but it sounds like the Tigers haven't yet decided if his next outing will be back on the farm or for the Tigers. If Olson returns to the Tigers' rotation for his next start, he'll be a poor streaming option for fantasy managers playing for a championship down the stretch. The former 13th-rounder of the Milwaukee Brewers in 2018 has a solid 3.23 ERA and 1.18 WHIP with 92 K's in 19 starts this year, but he last pitched for Detroit on July 20.

Fri Sep 6 202400:22Reese Olson Throws Two Shutout Innings In Rehab Start
Detroit Tigers right-hander Reese Olson (shoulder) made his first minor-league rehab start with Triple-A Toledo on Thursday and tossed two shutout innings, allowing one hit, walking one and striking out one while throwing 24 of his 39 total pitches for strikes. It was a nice first rehab outing for Olson. Because the 25-year-old has been sidelined due to a shoulder injury since late July, he's going to need a couple more rehab appearances before potentially rejoining Detroit's starting rotation for the tail end of the season in late September. His strikeout rate of 21.7% this year is slightly down from his rookie campaign, but overall, it's been a solid second year for Olson, who has gone 4-8 with a 3.23 ERA (3.15 FIP), a 1.18 WHIP and a 92:31 K:BB in 19 starts in his second big-league season. The next step for Olson will be to recapture the dominance he had exhibited in the minors.

Tue Aug 20 202421:34Reese Olson Set To Throw Bullpen Session Wednesday
Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Reese Olson (shoulder) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session on Wednesday. It'll be Olson's first time throwing off a mound since hitting the injured list with a strained right shoulder in late July. Although it's set to be a significant step forward in his throwing progression, Olson is still likely to be some time away from commencing a minor-league rehab assignment. If all goes well, however, the 25-year-old right-hander should be able to make it back for the Tigers at some point in September. Through 19 starts for Detroit, Olson has a 3.23 ERA and 1.18 WHIP with 92 strikeouts and 31 walks in 103 innings.

Tue Jul 23 202412:51Reese Olson Dealing With Mild Shoulder Injury
Detroit Tigers right-hander Reese Olson's shoulder injury appears to be mild after testing, according to manager A.J. Hinch. However, there's still no timetable for how long Olson is expected to be on the 15-day injured list. A right-shoulder strain caused the 24-year-old to be removed from his last outing on Saturday against the Toronto Blue Jays, and he landed on the IL the following day. This is good news for Olson, but it remains to be seen if he'll miss the minimum 15 days. The former 13th-round pick of the Milwaukee Brewers in 2018 has looked better in his sophomore campaign, posting a 3.23 ERA (3.11 FIP) and 1.18 WHIP despite a reduced 21.7% strikeout rate in 103 innings pitched over his 19 starts for the Tigers. Olson deserves to be stashed in deep-mixed leagues, especially if he could return on the first day he's eligible to be reinstated from the IL.

Sun Jul 21 202412:13Reese Olson Lands On 15-Day Injured List
The Detroit Tigers announced on Sunday that they placed right-hander Reese Olson (shoulder) on the 15-day injured list with a right-shoulder strain and also optioned infielder/outfielder Ryan Vilade to Triple-A Toledo. Olson heads to the shelf after being taken out of his start on Saturday early against the Toronto Blue Jays with shoulder soreness. Given the nature of the 24-year-old's injury, fantasy managers shouldn't necessarily expect him to return in the 15 days. Although Olson's 21.7% strikeout rate leaves something to be desired, he's been solid in his second big-league season in Detroit, posting a 3.23 ERA (3.12 FIP) and 1.18 WHIP with 92 strikeouts and 31 walks in 103 innings over his 19 starts. It's unclear who will replace Olson in the starting rotation, but fellow right-hander Casey Mize (hamstring) could be close to coming off his IL stint.

Sun Jun 30 202411:39Reese Olson Looks Sharp In No-Decision
Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Reese Olson looked good on the mound during Saturday's outing against the Los Angeles Angels. Olson struck out nine batters while allowing two runs over six innings in what ended up being a no-decision. He gave up a pair of runs early in the third inning, but Olson settled down after that. The 24-year-old has allowed two runs or fewer in three straight starts. He'll take a 3.32 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, and 81/26 K/BB ratio into his next start against the Cincinnati Reds.

Sat May 25 202416:23Reese Olson Dominant In Start On Saturday, Picks Up First Win
Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Reese Olson was dominant against the Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday, pitching into the 7th inning and picking up his first win of the season in the Tigers 2-1 victory. Olson gave up just three hits and recorded four strikeouts with his only blemish in the box score being three walks. The only run Olson gave up came in the 7th inning and was unearned. The 24-year-old lowered his ERA to 1.92, the lowest in a Tigers rotation that includes Cy Young candidate Tarik Skubal. Fantasy managers in need of starting pitchers should look to take advantage of Olson's hot start and snag him off the waiver wire if available. Olson's next scheduled start will be next Friday at Fenway Park against the Boston Red Sox.

Fri May 24 202416:10Reese Olson To Pitch On Saturday
Detroit Tigers right-hander Reese Olson (hip) is scheduled to make his next start on Saturday against the visiting Toronto Blue Jays. Olson was forced to leave his last start on Monday early against the Kansas City Royals when he was hit by a comebacker in his hip, but he only suffered a bruise and is ready to take his next turn in the rotation this weekend. In the plus matchup against a Blue Jays offense that has been out of sorts for most of the early part of the year, Olson should be returned to starting fantasy lineups in most leagues. The 24-year-old former 13th-round pick by the Milwaukee Brewers in 2018 has yet to win a game and has five losses, but it's not because he hasn't pitched well. He's currently sporting a great 2.16 ERA and 1.06 WHIP and has walked 16 and struck out 43 in 50 innings over his nine starts.

Wed May 22 202414:05Reese Olson Has Bullpen Pushed Back
Detroit Tigers right-hander Reese Olson (hip) didn't throw his bullpen session on Wednesday and will instead throw his bullpen on Thursday at Comerica Park before he returns to the rotation to start against the Toronto Blue Jays this weekend. Olson was hit on his right hip by a comebacker in his last start on Monday against the Kansas City Royals, but the injury wasn't serious enough to cause him to miss his next turn through the rotation this weekend in a better matchup against Toronto. The 24-year-old former 13th-round pick by the Milwaukee Brewers in 2018 has been outstanding for the Tigers and his fantasy managers so far this year, despite being 0-5. Olson is currently sporting a 2.16 ERA (2.82 FIP) and 1.06 WHIP while walking 16 and striking out 43 in 50 innings over his nine starts in just his second MLB season. Leave him in your starting lineups this weekend.

Tue May 21 202421:05Reese Olson Expects To Make Next Start
Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Reese Olson (hip) said he played catch on Tuesday and felt fine other than a little soreness around his hip. Olson will throw a side session on Wednesday, but he expects to be ready to go in time for Saturday's scheduled start at home against the Toronto Blue Jays after suffering a right hip contusion in Monday's start against the division-rival Kansas City Royals. The 24-year-old right-hander may be without a win through his nine starts this season, but he owns an excellent 2.16 ERA, 1.06 WHIP, and 43:16 K:BB over 50 innings of work for the Tigers. Fantasy managers should continue monitoring the status of Olson over the coming days for confirmation that he won't need to miss a turn in the rotation.
