Sat May 1002:40Kevin Ginkel Implodes In First Blown Save
Arizona Diamondbacks relief pitcher Kevin Ginkel had an atrocious outing on Friday, allowing five runs (all earned), blowing the save, and taking the loss in a 14-11 defeat at the hands of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Ginkel was summoned with a three-run lead in the ninth, and proceeded to get only one out while giving up four hits and hitting a batter before being pulled. Shohei Ohtani then hit a three-run homer to add a few more earned runs to Ginkel's line. The disastrous affair brings Ginkel's ERA to 15.43 and his WHIP to 2.57. Even though Arizona's bullpen is depleted right now, it seems unlikely that Ginkel will get another chance to close out games, at least for a while. Shelby Miller will likely see the bulk of the opportunities, and he is worth a look in leagues where saves are scarce.

Mon Apr 721:42Kevin Ginkel To Throw Bullpen Session On Tuesday
Arizona Diamondbacks relief pitcher Kevin Ginkel (shoulder) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session on Tuesday. This is a good step forward as Ginkel has been sidelined to open the season with right shoulder inflammation. The D-Backs are certainly excited to get Ginkel back soon considering he was one of their last relief pitchers last season. He posted a 3.21 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, with a 77/15 K/BB ratio in 72 appearances in 2024. Ginkel figures to get some save chances in Arizona, but will probably be stuck behind A.J. Puk and Justin Martinez in the pecking order. That being said, Ginkel probably won't be worth rostering in fantasy formats, but his progress is good news for the D-Backs bullpen.

Thu Mar 2717:35Kevin Ginkel Placed On 15-Day Injured List
The Arizona Diamondbacks placed right-handed reliever Kevin Ginkel (shoulder) on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to March 24) due to right-shoulder inflammation. This move was expected after Ginkel developed some shoulder inflammation late in spring training. The good news is that the 31-year-old veteran might come off the IL as soon as he's eligible to return in early April. To start the season, the D-backs will mix and match save chances with righty Justin Martinez and left-hander A.J. Puk. While Ginkel might not see many save opportunities in 2025 if both Martinez and Puk stay healthy, he should still be valuable in holds leagues as a high-leverage bullpen arm for the Snakes. Ginkel had one of his best seasons in 2024 and set career-highs in appearances (72), innings (70), strikeouts (77) and holds (18) out of Arizona's bullpen.

Tue Mar 2516:14Kevin Ginkel Likely To Start On Injured List
Arizona Diamondbacks right-handed reliever Kevin Ginkel (shoulder) is likely to start the 2025 regular season on the injured list due to shoulder inflammation, according to manager Torey Lovullo. Ginkel began dealing with inflammation in his shoulder at the end of camp, but he's not expected to have an extended stay on the IL. The 31-year-old veteran is entering the seventh season of his MLB career, with all previous six campaigns coming in the desert. He went 8-3 in 2024 with a 3.21 ERA (2.85 FIP), a 1.20 WHIP, a career-high five saves, a career-high 77 strikeouts and 15 walks in 70 relief innings for the Snakes. Ginkel also picked up a career-best 18 holds and should once again be useful in fantasy leagues that count holds as one of Arizona's primary late-inning setup men in front of closing options Justin Martinez and A.J. Puk.

Tue Oct 1 202416:37Kevin Ginkel Pitches Through Fractured Leg
Arizona Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo confirmed on Tuesday that right-handed reliever Kevin Ginkel (leg) fractured a bone in his left leg after taking a comebacker against the New York Mets on June 1. Ginkel was able to pitch through the injury but had to manage the pain. He was decent pitching through the injury, posting a 2.81 ERA with 16 runs (15 earned) allowed in 48 innings while striking out 57 and walking 10 over 49 appearances out of Arizona's bullpen. It's impressive that the 30-year-old never required a stint on the injured list. Ginkel will now have ample time to recover from his injury this offseason and should be ready to roll for the start of spring training in mid-February. Overall, Ginkel had an 8-3 record, 3.21 ERA (2.85 FIP), a 1.20 WHIP, a career-high five saves, a career-high 77 strikeouts and 15 walks in 70 innings pitched in 72 appearances out of the bullpen.

Sat Jun 1 202421:56X-Rays Come Back Negative For Kevin Ginkel
Arizona Diamondbacks right-hander Kevin Ginkel (knee) underwent x-rays on Saturday, which came back negative. Ginkel is considered day-to-day. The 30-year-old was diagnosed with a left knee contusion after being hit in the left leg with a comebacker during Saturday's game against the New York Mets. He picked up the win after throwing a scoreless inning before exiting. The 30-year-old is Arizona's primary setup man after posting a 4.09 ERA, 1.32 WHIP, and 20 strikeouts over 22 innings in 2024. Ginkel has more fantasy value in leagues, counting saves and holds, but is mainly an option in deep-league formats.

Sat Jun 1 202419:24Kevin Ginkel Exits Early After Being Hit By Comebacker
Arizona Diamondbacks reliever Kevin Ginkel exited Saturday's game against the New York Mets early after being hit in the knee by a comebacker off the bat of Brandon Nimmo. Ginkel was able to walk it off but had a noticeable limp. The team should be releasing more information on Ginkel's status later on Saturday, but until then he should be considered day-to-day. The 30-year-old had been having a subpar year after a very solid 2023 but was due for a touch of positive regression (4.29 ERA vs 3.93 xERA). Fantasy managers should keep an eye on his status going forward. In the meantime, Justin Martinez may get a few more innings as a right-handed option out of the pen if Ginkel is to miss some time.

Sun Apr 28 202419:40Kevin Ginkel Locks Down Fifth Save
Arizona Diamondbacks relief pitcher Kevin Ginkel has been a viable option for the team early in the season. The right-hander was asked to take over the closer role after Paul Sewald (oblique) went down. On Sunday, Ginkel made it look easy as he threw a scoreless ninth inning to hold the one-run lead over the Seattle Mariners. He holds a 3.00 ERA, 1.08 WHIP, and a 13/3 K/BB ratio, while converting five of his seven save chances. The expectation is that Ginkel will remain the primary closer until Sewald is ready to return.

Tue Apr 16 202412:15Kevin Ginkel Blows His Second Save Monday
Arizona Diamondbacks relief pitcher Kevin Ginkel blew his second save of the season in Monday's 3-2 extra-inning loss to the Chicago Cubs. Ginkel entered the ninth inning with a one-run lead but allowed an earned run on two hits while walking none and striking out one. The tying run ended up scoring on a wild pitch all the way from second base to tie the game and eventually send it to extra frames. The 30-year-old was coming off three straight successful saves, so this hiccup probably won't hurt him too much as he fills in for Paul Sewald (oblique) in the short term in the closer's role. In his eight appearances out of the 'pen for Arizona so far this year, Ginkel has allowed five runs (three earned) on eight hits (one homer) while walking two and striking out 10.

Sat Apr 13 202423:29Kevin Ginkel Notches Third Save
Arizona Diamondbacks right-hander Kevin Ginkel threw a scoreless inning to earn the save in Saturday's 4-2 win over the St. Louis Cardinals. Ginkel entered the ninth inning to protect a two-run lead. The 30-year-old retired the side to earn his third save of the season. Ginkel owns a 2.45 ERA, 1.07 WHIP, and nine strikeouts over 7 1/3 innings in 2024. He is Arizona's primary closer, while Paul Sewald (oblique) is sidelined. Sewald recently threw a bullpen session on Saturday as he continues to work his way back from a Grade 2 left oblique strain. Ginkel should see plenty of save chances until Sewald returns from the injured list and should be rostered in league formats.

Wed Apr 10 202421:44Kevin Ginkel Ekes Out Save No. 2
Arizona Diamondbacks relief pitcher Kevin Ginkel walked a tightrope on the way to tallying his second save in as many days, fanning two hitters in Wednesday's 5-3 win over the division-rival Colorado Rockies. Ginkel got Charlie Blackmon and Kris Bryant to strike out but allowed a single and two walks to fall into a hairy situation on Wednesday. Nolan Jones flied out to get Ginkel out of the bases-loaded jam, but the 30-year-old right-hander needed 29 pitches to lock it down. Filling in for injured closer Paul Sewald (oblique), Ginkel is posting a solid 2.84 ERA and 1.26 WHIP with nine punchouts over 6 1/3 frames as Arizona's interim favorite for saves. With Sewald still likely a few weeks away from returning to the D-backs' bullpen, Ginkel should be rostered in the majority of fantasy leagues for the time being.

Mon Mar 25 202419:09Kevin Ginkel Likely To Open As D-Backs Closer
Arizona Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo doesn't want to name a closer right away to open the season with right-hander Paul Sewald (oblique) starting the year on the injured list due to a Grade 2 left-oblique strain, but Kevin Ginkel is the most likely option to get the first crack at the job. Nothing is set in stone, though, and Scott McGough, who had nine saves in 2023, and Miguel Castro could be other options that Lovullo turns to late in games until Sewald is able to return. It's obviously a pretty big blow for Sewald's fantasy value to open the year, but Arizona's closer should be stashed in all fantasy leagues. The 30-year-old Ginkel picked up four saves in 2023 while also sporting a nice 2.48 ERA with 23 walks and 70 K's in 65 1/3 frames. Ginkel will now be a hot waiver-wire pickup for saves.

Tue Feb 20 202414:35Kevin Ginkel Throws Bullpen On Tuesday
Arizona Diamondbacks right-hander Kevin Ginkel (elbow) threw a bullpen session at camp on Tuesday. Ginkel entered spring training last week with some minor right-elbow soreness, but he was able to play catch over the weekend and is throwing his first bullpen session on Tuesday. Barring another setback with his right elbow, the 29-year-old reliever should have plenty of time to get ready for Opening Day. Ginkel had a great year for the D-backs in his third year with the team in 2023, going 9-1 with a 2.48 ERA (2.86 FIP), a 0.98 WHIP, a career-high four saves, 23 walks and a career-high 70 strikeouts in 65 1/3 relief innings in the regular season. He also had nine holds and was a ground-ball machine as Arizona's best overall relief pitcher. Ginkel should once again be relevant in deep holds leagues, but his bloated career walk rate points to regression in 2024.

Sun Feb 18 202420:55Kevin Ginkel Throws On Sunday
Arizona Diamondbacks relief pitcher Kevin Ginkel (elbow) was able to play catch on Sunday without any issues. The right-hander began experiencing elbow soreness towards the beginning of February. The D-Backs might play it safe for a little bit, but Ginkel should be fine going forward. Last season, Ginkel posted a 2.48 ERA, 0.98 WHIP, and 70/23 K/BB ratio across 65 1/3 innings. The right-hander could pick up a handful of saves, but probably won't be the primary ninth-inning option.

Thu Feb 15 202414:44Kevin Ginkel Dealing With Elbow Soreness
Arizona Diamondbacks reliever Kevin Ginkel is dealing with right elbow soreness and will be slow played a bit during camp. The right-hander enjoyed an excellent 2023 season that saw him work to a 2.48 ERA across 60 appearances, locking down four saves and eight holds in the process. It was the second straight quality season for the 29-year-old after he worked to a 3.38 ERA in the 2022 campaign, albeit in just 30 appearances. The D-backs acquired closer Paul Sewald from the Mariners prior to the trade deadline last season, meaning Ginkel won't be in line for a ton of save opportunities in 2024, although he did post a 27.6% K% last season. He should get his fair share of holds but his fantasy value doesn't warrant an investment on draft day.

Wed Jul 26 202308:05Kevin Ginkel Records Tuesday's Save
Arizona Diamondbacks reliever Kevin Ginkel earned the save on Tuesday when he closed out the 3-1 win over the St. Louis Cardinals. The right-hander went one inning and gave up one hit but didn't allow a run to score. The save is Ginkel's third of the season, all coming since July 18, and with his strong 2.31 ERA, 1.00 WHIP, and 22.5% strikeout rate, he looks to be leading the closer committee in Arizona. Fantasy managers looking for more saves should add the 29-year-old while they still can.

Tue Apr 4 202312:15Kevin Ginkel Tipping His Pitches?
Arizona Diamondbacks relief pitcher Kevin Ginkel thinks he might have been tipping his pitches against the Los Angeles Dodgers last Saturday, and he's planning to make some adjustments to the way he holds the ball in his glove before his delivery. The Athletic's Eno Sarris tweeted screenshots of Ginkel before he delivered the baseball that showed his wrist bent before throwing a slider and straight before a fastball. The 29-year-old gave up three runs on two hits (one home run) in his outing against the Dodgers on Saturday. Hopefully with some adjustments before he delivers pitches, he'll fare better without opposing hitters knowing what's coming. In two outings so far in 2023, Ginkel has allowed three earned runs in 1 2/3 frames.

Wed May 19 202102:48Turnbull gets MLB's 5th no-hitter, Tigers beat Mariners 5-0
SEATTLE (AP) — Spencer Turnbull pitched the fifth no-hitter in the majors this season, sending the Detroit Tigers to a 5-0 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday night. Turnbull, who led the big leagues with 17 losses two years ago, had never gone more than seven innings in any of his previous 49 starts over three seasons. The five no-hitters through May 18 match the 1917 season for the most in baseball history by that date. Turnbull’s no-hitter was the eighth in Tigers history and their first since Justin Verlander’s in Toronto on May 7, 2011. The 28-year-old right-hander got a great defensive play from third baseman Jeimer Candelario in the seventh inning and then struck out Mitch Haniger in the ninth to end it. Turnbull (3-2) struck out nine and walked two. Turnbull threw 117 pitches, 77 for strikes. Haniger was the only batter to hit the ball hard enough to threaten a base hit.
