Atlanta Braves left-hander Chris Sale (back) has been scratched from Game 2 of the doubleheader against the division-rival New York Mets at Truist Park on Monday as the Braves attempt to punch their ticket to the postseason after losing a dramatic back-and-forth affair in Game 1. Right-handed rookie Grant Holmes will instead start the must-win contest in Game 2. It's a huge blow for the Braves as the 35-year-old Sale is a National League Cy Young front-runner this year. If the Braves do win Game 2 and advance to face the San Diego Padres in the wild-card round, starting on Tuesday at Petco Park, it's unknown if he'd be available at all to pitch in that series. The Braves are calling Sale's situation day-to-day for now. Holmes now has a 1-0 record, 3.60 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, and 47 strikeouts over 45 innings of work for the Braves this season. He is worth a look as a streaming option in plus matchups moving forward.

Holmes, a former first-round pick by the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2014, has yet to make his major-league debut. He spent all of the 2023 season at Triple-A Gwinnett, where he went 7-3 with a 3.54 ERA and 1.29 WHIP while walking 26 and striking out 74 in 61 innings over 50 relief appearances. In nine minor-league seasons, he's appeared in 232 games (111 starts) and has posted a 4.58 ERA and 1.45 WHIP in 694 1/3 innings pitched. Holmes will strictly operate as organizational pitching depth yet again for Atlanta in 2024.
