Mon Jun 3020:19Jordan Hicks Reinstated From 15-Day Injured List on Monday
The Boston Red Sox announced on Monday that they reinstated right-hander Jordan Hicks (toe) from the 15-day injured list and optioned right-hander Zack Kelly to Triple-A Worcester in a corresponding move. Hicks will be making his debut with the Red Sox when he gets into a game after being acquired from the San Francisco Giants on June 15 in the Rafael Devers deal. The 28-year-old hard-throwing hurler was demoted from a starting role to a relief role with the Giants before the trade and is expected to remain in a relief role with the Red Sox now that he's healthy. Hicks has the stuff to be used in a high-leverage relief role, but the BoSox will most likely ease him in as a middle reliever. He went 1-5 with a 6.47 ERA, 1.54 WHIP and 43:20 K:BB in 48 2/3 innings over 13 outings (nine starts) with the Giants and won't have a ton of fantasy appeal unless he eventually returns to a starting role.

Sat Jun 2811:20Jordan Hicks Hits 100 MPH on Rehab Assignment
Boston Red Sox right-hander Jordan Hicks (toe) was throwing gas in his most recent rehab outing with Triple-A Worcester. According to MassLive's Christopher Smith, he hit 100.1 mph while recording a scoreless inning with two strikeouts, allowing one hit and one walk. He could be activated as soon as Monday. Acquired from the San Francisco Giants as part of the Rafael Devers trade, Hicks has yet to pitch for the Red Sox while rehabbing a toe injury. With Hicks' move back to the bullpen, he could be an interesting addition for fantasy managers. In his last full season as a reliever in 2023, Hicks recorded 12 saves and 81 strikeouts across 65 innings pitched. He's likely behind Aroldis Chapman in the pecking order for saves in Boston, but could be next in line should Chapman falter.

Mon Jun 2310:10Jordan Hicks Struggles in Triple-A Rehab Start
Boston Red Sox right-hander Jordan Hicks (toe) struggled Sunday in his first rehab outing with Triple-A Worcester. Hicks, working as an opener for Worcester, was unable to get through an inning. He recorded two outs and allowed two earned runs on three hits and a walk. He was then lifted after 23 pitches, only 10 of which were strikes. Hicks, who's working back from inflammation in his right big toe, figures to make at least one more appearance with Worcester before joining the Red Sox. When he does get the call to Boston, he'll be making his debut with the club. The Red Sox acquired Hicks from the San Francisco Giants on June 15 as part of a trade centering on Rafael Devers. Hicks divided his time with the Giants this season between the rotation and bullpen. He's likely to work in relief for the Red Sox.

Sat Jun 2116:05Jordan Hicks to Begin Triple-A Rehab Assignment Sunday
Boston Red Sox right-hander Jordan Hicks (toe) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Worcester on Sunday, according to Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic. If all goes well, Hicks will debut with the Red Sox on a homestand that runs from June 27-July 2. Hicks joined the Red Sox last weekend as part of their return from the San Francisco Giants for star slugger Rafael Devers. The 28-year-old hurler last pitched June 1 and then went on the 15-day injured list with inflammation in his right big toe. Hicks has worked most of his career as a reliever, but he opened this year as a starter before the Giants demoted him to their bullpen. He has recorded a bloated 6.47 ERA (3.85 xERA) with 43:20 K:BB in 48 2/3 innings this season. It appears the Red Sox will use Hicks in relief. "We're absolutely excited about bringing Jordan Hicks, a dominant late-inning reliever, into our mix," general manager Craig Breslow said when Boston acquired Hicks.

Wed Jun 1822:07Jordan Hicks to Throw Live Batting Practice on Thursday
Boston Red Sox right-hander Jordan Hicks (toe), who is currently on the 15-day injured list with inflammation in his right big toe, is scheduled to throw a live batting practice session on Thursday. "I'm not sure what's next for him. If anything a rehab assignment and then hopefully he'll be with us," manager Alex Cora said. The 28-year-old has been out since early this month and will need a minor-league rehab assignment before he makes his Red Sox debut, but he should be back before the end of the month, barring a setback. Before being acquired in a trade from the Giants, Hicks had been demoted to a relief role in San Francisco after posting a 6.55 ERA and 1.52 WHIP in 45 1/3 innings in nine starts. There have been no indications that he'll be moved back to a starting role in Beantown, meaning he'll likely remain on the waiver wire in mixed fantasy leagues.

Sun Jun 1520:18Jordan Hicks Headed to Boston
San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Jordan Hicks (toe) is part of a massive trade with the Boston Red Sox on Sunday. Hicks is headed to Boston along with Kyle Harrison, James Tibbs, and Jose Bello in exchange for slugger Rafael Devers. Hicks was recently placed on the 15-day injured list with right toe inflammation. Before that, Hicks posted a 6.47 ERA, 1.54 WHIP, with 43 strikeouts over 48.2 innings of work. The Hicks experiment didn't work out in San Francisco. They signed him to a four-year deal in 2024, so the Red Sox will be on the hook through 2027. He has a good track record and has worked as both a starter and reliever in his career. We'll see how the Red Sox decide to use him once he's healthy enough to pitch again.

Thu Jun 1214:52Jordan Hicks Throws a Bullpen Session
San Francisco Giants right-hander Jordan Hicks (toe) landed on the 15-day injured list on June 3 after injuring his right big toe while making a relief appearance against the Miami Marlins on June 1. MLB.com reports that Hicks threw a bullpen session on Tuesday before the team's game at Coors Field against the division-rival Colorado Rockies. Because he's now in a relief role, the hard-throwing 28-year-old shouldn't require a lengthy rehab process and could return to San Fran's bullpen in mid-June. After being demoted from a starting role, Hicks allowed two earned runs in his first 3 1/3 innings of relief. Overall, he's had a tough season in 2025 with a 1-5 record, 6.47 ERA and 1.54 WHIP with 43 strikeouts and 20 walks in 48 2/3 frames over 13 appearances (nine starts). As long as he stays in relief, his fantasy impact will be minimal.

Tue Jun 319:25Jordan Hicks Placed on 15-Day Injured List With Toe Inflammation
The San Francisco Giants placed right-hander Jordan Hicks (toe) on the 15-day injured list on Tuesday with right-toe inflammation and recalled pitcher Sean Hjelle from Triple-A Sacramento in a corresponding move, according to the San Francisco Chronicle's John Shea. Hicks lost the majority of his fantasy value when he was demoted from the starting rotation to the bullpen in San Francisco, and now he's falling further with a trip to the IL. It's unclear if the 28-year-old hard-throwing right-hander will be able to come off the IL when he's eligible in a couple of weeks. Since moving to a relief role, he allowed two earned runs in 3 1/3 innings, and Hicks has a disappointing 1-5 record, 6.47 ERA and 1.54 WHIP with 43 strikeouts and 20 walks in 48 2/3 innings over 13 appearances (nine starts) in his second year with the Gigantes.

Wed May 2115:20Jordan Hicks Not Giving Up After Demotion to Bullpen
San Francisco Giants right-hander Jordan Hicks, who was recently demoted to a relief role, is ready to "turn the page" for now but isn't giving up on being a starter. Hicks made 20 starts in 2024 but was sent to the bullpen this year after posting a 6.55 ERA over his first nine starts for San Fran. "Yeah, I want to be a starting pitcher. That's always what I've wanted to do in the big leagues. It's not the time right now," Hicks said. The hard-throwing 28-year-old spent most of his five seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals as a reliever and has 33 saves, 53 holds, a 4.24 ERA and 392 strikeouts. Manager Bob Melvin pinpointed Hicks' sinker as a potential reason for his lack of success so far in 2025. He made his first relief appearance on Monday against the Royals and struggled with his control, throwing seven of 16 pitches for strikes and allowing an earned run. Hicks loses most of his fantasy appeal as a reliever.

Tue Apr 100:10Jordan Hicks Earns Quality Start, Win In Season Debut Monday
San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Jordan Hicks looked sharp in his first start of the season Monday, helping his team to a 7-2 win over the Astros. The 28-year-old tossed six scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and two walks with six strikeouts. Hicks had a strong first half in 2024 with a 3.79 ERA and a 1.36 WHIP while returning to a rotation role, but his poor second half forced him to end the season in the bullpen. Hicks' heavy sinker has carried fantasy appeal throughout his career, and his first start against a solid Astros lineup could spark interest once again. He is widely available and should have a good chance to string together another solid outing in his next scheduled start at home against the Mariners, making him worth a look in at least deeper leagues.

Thu Mar 2007:48Jordan Hicks Bounces Back With Strong Start
San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Jordan Hicks looked sharp on Wednesday night against the Royals in a Spring Training game in Surprise, Arizona. Hicks went 5 2/3 innings, allowing just three hits and one run while striking out three. The run came on a solo shot off the bat of Bobby Witt Jr. in the first inning. Hicks settled down though, and looked much better than he had through his first three starts this spring in which he allowed seven runs in 6 2/3 innings. He seems locked into a starting spot in the rotation coming into the season after going 4-7 with a 4.10 ERA, 4.37 FIP and 7.9 K/9 in 29 games last year. Hicks bulked up this offseason and will look to turn his extra velocity into more starts like Wednesday's. He's a depth piece for NL-Only leagues and a matchup-based streaming option coming into season.

Wed Feb 1216:21Jordan Hicks Gains 14 Pounds
San Francisco Giants right-hander Jordan Hicks said he gained around 14 pounds in the offseason to prepare for a full season as a starter in 2025. Hicks said he feels that he can "take the training wheels off." The 28-year-old hurler moved to a starting role last year in his first season with the Giants and got off to a fantastic start before eventually tiring out late in the year and being moved to the bullpen. He went 4-7 with a 4.10 ERA (4.37 FIP), 1.45 WHIP, a career-high 96 strikeouts and 47 walks in a career-high 109 2/3 innings over 29 appearances (20 starts). He should be better equipped to handle an elevated workload in 2025 in his second year as a starter, but there remains plenty of risk for fantasy managers. Hicks did have two stints on the injured list due to shoulder inflammation. Fantasy managers in mixed leagues should have better options.

Mon Dec 9 202422:01Jordan Hicks To Remain In Starting Rotation
San Francisco Giants president of baseball operations Buster Posey said on Monday at the winter meetings that right-hander Jordan Hicks will remain in the starting rotation in 2025. In his first full season as a starter in the big leagues in his first year with the Giants in 2024, the hard-throwing Hicks did very well but broke down in the second half and was then shifted to the bullpen to monitor his workload. He finished 4-7 with a 4.10 ERA (4.37 FIP), a 1.45 WHIP, one save, a career-high 96 strikeouts and 47 walks in a career-high 109 2/3 innings over 29 outings (20 starts). The 28-year-old should be better positioned to handle the elevated workload next year, but he'll fantasy managers shouldn't forget about his shoulder injuries from this past season. In his first 12 starts in 2024, Hicks had a 2.70 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 52:19 K:BB before falling apart in his final eight starts.

Fri Sep 20 202416:35Jordan Hicks Returns To The Injured List
The San Francisco Giants placed right-hander Jordan Hicks (shoulder) back on the 15-day injured list on Friday with right-shoulder inflammation and recalled pitcher Austin Warren from the minors in a corresponding move. Given the fact that there is just over a week left in the regular season, Hicks will not pitch again in 2024. The 28-year-old's elevated workload in his first year in the Bay Area as a starter has certainly caught up with him, and it's the same injury that he returned from less than a week ago. Because of Hicks' elevated workload, the Giants moved him to a relief role in the second half, and he has struggled out of the bullpen. Hicks was solid for fantasy managers early on as a starter, though, and he'll finish his first year with San Fran with a 4-7 record, 4.10 ERA, a 1.45 WHIP, 96 strikeouts and 47 walks in a career-high 109 2/3 frames over 29 outings (20 starts).

Sun Sep 15 202400:14Jordan Hicks Returns From Injured List
San Francisco Giants right-hander Jordan Hicks (shoulder) returned from the injured list on Saturday. Hicks was used immediately in a relief role on Saturday night, throwing an inning and giving up two hits but no runs in his first appearance since Aug. 24. Hicks has four wins and one save in 29 games this year covering 109 innings. The veteran has a 3.87 ERA and 1.42 WHIP this season for San Francisco, and his role for next year is undetermined at this time. Hicks began the year as a starter and was starting games through mid-July before the Gigantes moved him to their bullpen. Barring an injury heading into the offseason, Hicks will likely return to a starting role in 2025.

Tue Aug 27 202421:47Giants Place Jordan Hicks On The 15-Day Injured List
The San Francisco Giants placed right-hander Jordan Hicks on the 15-day injured list with right shoulder inflammation ahead of Tuesday's game against the hosting Milwaukee Brewers. Hicks has been battling a lingering shoulder issue and was unavailable for Friday's contest against the Seattle Mariners after feeling a "zinger" down his right arm on two of his final three warmup pitches, but he was cleared to pitch after playing catch without issue the following day before eventually going on the IL. Hicks is 4-7 with a 3.90 ERA this year, making 20 starts before being moved to the bullpen in late July. The 27-year-old righty has made eight appearances in relief and logged 108 1/3 innings overall for the Giants this season. Ryan Walker and Camilo Doval figure to share save chances in San Francisco until Hicks is back in the mix, which likely won't be until mid-September.

Fri Aug 9 202421:32Jordan Hicks A Potential Option For Giants' Open Closer Role
San Francisco Giants pitcher Jordan Hicks was mentioned by manager Bob Melvin as a potential option for the Giants' closing role after the club optioned Camilo Doval on Friday, but not quite yet. Melvin was hesitant to announce who'd get the closer role, and left Hicks' chances simply as a possibility. The 27-year-old has worked out of the bullpen for most of his career and was moved into San Francisco's bullpen in late July to protect his workload to finish the season. With Blake Snell and Robbie Ray coming back into San Francisco's rotation recently, it's provided the Giants some flexibility to keep Hicks in his familiar role. At three games back of a wild-card spot in the National League, San Francisco will stay aggressive as they look to snag a playoff spot. Hicks could be in line for valuable saves, and fantasy managers looking for closer help should be prepared for him to slide into that role yet again. In addition to Hicks, Ryan Walker, ... [More]

Sun Jul 28 202412:30Jordan Hicks Won't Start On Sunday
San Francisco Giants right-hander Jordan Hicks will not make the start on Sunday versus the visiting Colorado Rockies and will instead be moved to the bullpen to protect his career-high workload the rest of the way in 2024. The Giants will roll with left-hander Erik Miller as the opener in this one, with Hicks possibly come on in a relief role later in the ballgame. San Francisco was already preparing to move the 27-year-old Hicks to a bullpen role after he potentially made his final start of the year on Sunday. He gave up four runs while walking five and striking out seven in 3 2/3 innings in his last start against the division-rival Los Angeles Dodgers and admitted that he has been feeling the effects of an elevated workload this year. His recent results have reflected that, as he's gone 0-4 with an 8.18 ERA and 1.95 WHIP in his last 22 innings pitched.

Thu Jul 25 202415:38Jordan Hicks Could Be Moved To Bullpen This Weekend
The original plan for the San Francisco Giants was to give right-hander Jordan Hicks one more start this Sunday against the visiting Colorado Rockies and then meet to discuss his role for August and September. But after Hicks allowed four runs to the division-rival Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday and admitted his body still feels "a little work down," the Giants will accelerate those talks and will possibly move Hicks to the bullpen this weekend. The issue is complicated this weekend by the fact that Giants have a doubleheader on Saturday, but either way, his fantasy value is plummeting in the second half. He has thrown 98 2/3 innings in 2024 in his transition to a starting role and is already 21 frames past his previous career-high. If Hicks makes one more start, it might last around three innings, so fantasy managers shouldn't start him.

Sat Jul 20 202414:59Jordan Hicks Scratched From Sunday's Start
San Francisco Giants right-hander Jordan Hicks has been scratched from Sunday's scheduled start against the hosting Colorado Rockies. Instead, 22-year-old Hayden Birdsong will get the ball on Sunday for his fifth career big-league start. Hicks transitioned to a starter after inking a four-year deal with the Giants this past winter and has posted a solid 3.79 ERA across 19 outings on the season. However, his 95 innings pitched this season are already a career-high and his current 20.3% K% is a career-low at this point in the season. There haven't been any reports of an injury but it's worth noting that Hicks recently stated his body is "feeling it a bit more than past seasons". The run prevention is solid but his low strikeout rate combined with a potential return to the bullpen -- or the injured list -- puts a solid damper on his fantasy value.
