Tue May 2714:35A's Acquire Sean Newcomb From Red Sox
The Athletics announced on Tuesday that they acquired left-hander Sean Newcomb from the Boston Red Sox in exchange for cash considerations. In a corresponding move to clear space on the 40-man roster, the A's designated left-hander Matt Krook and right-hander Ryan Cusick for assignment. Also, outfielder/first baseman Seth Smith cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Las Vegas. Newcomb will head to the American League West after the Red Sox designated him for assignment over the weekend. The 31-year-old southpaw will return to the A's after making 14 appearances for them in 2023 and 2024. He had a 3.95 ERA, 1.76 WHIP and 41:17 K:BB in 41 innings over 12 outings (five starts) with Boston this year before being cut. With the A's, he'll likely serve in a long-relief role and as starting-rotation insurance.

Sun May 2512:12Red Sox Designate Sean Newcomb for Assignment
The Boston Red Sox announced on Saturday that they designated left-hander Sean Newcomb for assignment and recalled right-hander Luis Guerrero from Triple-A Worcester in a corresponding move. Newcomb gets the boot off the team's 40- man roster after opening the year with an 0-4 record, 3.83 ERA (3.28 FIP) and a 1.75 WHIP with 41 strikeouts and 16 walks in 40 innings pitched over 11 appearances (five starts). The 31-year-old southpaw has really struggled of late, allowing seven runs (six earned) in his last 12 1/3 innings, causing him to lose his spot on the MLB roster. If Newcomb clears waivers, he could return to Worcester and stay in Boston's organization as left-handed pitching depth. Obviously, Newcomb isn't on the fantasy radar at this time.

Thu Mar 2717:30Sean Newcomb Likely To Be Fifth Starter
After the Boston Red Sox optioned right-hander Quinn Priester to Triple-A Worcester on Sunday, it's likely that left-hander Sean Newcomb will open the year as the team's fifth starter, and he was officially added to the Opening Day roster on Thursday before their game against the Texas Rangers. Newcomb earned the spot, posting a 0.63 ERA with 13 strikeouts in five Grapefruit League appearances (four starts). Injuries to Brayan Bello (shoulder), Kutter Crawford (knee) and Lucas Giolito (hamstring) have given the 31-year-old southpaw an opportunity to open the 2025 campaign. However, depending on how he fares on the mound, Newcomb could only be in line to stick in Boston's rotation for the first couple of turns in the first month of the season. His season debut will come on Monday in Baltimore against the division-rival Orioles, where he should be avoided in fantasy.

Mon Mar 1721:38Sean Newcomb A Candidate For Rotation Spot
MLB.com's Ian Browne says not to rule out Boston Red Sox left-hander Sean Newcomb for an Opening Day starting rotation spot with Brayan Bello (shoulder), Lucas Giolito (hamstring) and Kutter Crawford (knee) all opening the regular season on the injured list. "He's been solid. The cutter has made a difference. Throwing strikes, that's the most important thing. This is a guy we've seen from the last few years against us. It always caught my attention. They've done a good job, the pitching department, adding the cutter, kind of like a strike stealer or avoiding barrels. And so far, so good. He's in the hunt. He's caught our eyes," manager Alex Cora said. The 31-year-old southpaw and former first-rounder in 2014 by the Los Angeles Angels has given up only one run in 9 2/3 spring innings and is competing with Quinn Priester and Richard Fitts for the final rotation spot out of camp. The fact Newcomb doesn't have minor-league options left could help his cause.

Sun Mar 24 202412:14Sean Newcomb To Start The Year On Injured List
Oakland Athletics left-hander Sean Newcomb (knee), who has not pitched since March 20, is experiencing irritation in the left knee that he had surgery on last September, and it will put him on the 15-day injured list to begin the 2024 season. Newcomb had a 3.00 ERA in four Cactus League outings this spring and was expected to begin the year in the bullpen as the team's top lefty relief option. In addition to Newcomb, the A's bullpen is also dealing with injuries to Trevor Gott (elbow), who needs Tommy John surgery, and lefty Scott Alexander (ribs), so they could explore the free-agent market for more relief options to start the season. The 30-year-old southpaw wasn't on the fantasy radar to begin with after making just seven appearances (two starts) in his first season with the A's in 2023.

Thu Feb 15 202418:30Freddy Tarnok, Sean Newcomb Slightly Behind In Camp
Oakland Athletics manager Mark Kotsay mentioned that relief pitchers Sean Newcomb (knees) and Freddy Tarnok (hip) are "slightly behind" the rest of the team's pitchers at spring training as they return from surgeries. Both pitchers are progressing well on slower programs and may not pitch in Cactus League games right away. Newcomb, 30, had left-knee surgery in September and surgery on his right knee in December. The left-hander threw just 15 innings for the A's in 2023 and is ticketed for a long-relief role in 2024. Stay away from him in fantasy. Tarnok, 25, had right-hip surgery in August and will be an option for Oakland's starting rotation when he's healthy. He allowed eight earned runs while walking 11 and fanning 14 in 14 2/3 innings over five outings (one start) in 2023.

Wed Dec 20 202321:30Sean Newcomb Undergoes Another Knee Surgery
The Oakland Athletics announced on Wednesday that left-hander Sean Newcomb (knee) underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee with Dr. Will Workman. It's different from the left-knee surgery he had in September, and he's expected to be ready for spring training. Newcomb made only seven big-league appearances (two starts) for the A's in 2023, allowing five earned runs on eight hits (one homer) while walking nine and striking out 17 in 15 innings pitched. The 30-year-old southpaw could be used as both a starter and reliever for Oakland again in 2024, but he's not going to have much fantasy appeal. In seven years in the majors with the A's, Atlanta Braves and Chicago Cubs, Newcomb has a 4.47 ERA (4.41 FIP) and 1.46 WHIP in 168 appearances (60 starts) covering 421 innings.

Thu Nov 2 202319:46Sean Newcomb Remains With A's On One-Year Extension
Oakland A's pitcher Sean Newcomb has inked a one-year, $1 million deal to remain with the club for the 2024 season. The left-hander was acquired by the A's from the San Francisco Giants in exchange for minor league outfielder Trenton Brooks in a rare post-deadline deal between the two Bay Area clubs. Newcomb never pitched in the big leagues for the Giants but appeared in seven games for the A's, posting a 3.00 ERA and 27.9% K% across 15 innings of work. For his career, the 2014 first-round pick sports a 4.47 ERA across 168 appearances, although his talents have been capped by subpar control by way of a career 12.3% BB%. He will likely serve as a reliever and opener for the A's in the 2024 campaign.

Sun Sep 17 202316:46Sean Newcomb Heads To Injured List With Knee Strain
Oakland Athletics pitcher Sean Newcomb (knee) was placed on the IL with a strained left knee. Right-handed pitcher Joe Boyle was selected from Triple-A Las Vegas to replace Newcomb on the roster. The last two appearances for the lefty have been starts as he combined for seven innings, giving up four earned runs. The 30-year-old was once a top prospect but has fallen on tough times over the last three-plus years. He was given another shot to start late in the season for the A's but struggled in his second outing and will now be on the shelf.

Tue Aug 22 202314:11Sean Newcomb Traded From Giants To A's
The San Francisco Giants have traded pitcher Sean Newcomb to the Oakland Athletics in exchange for outfielder Trenton Brooks. It's a rare deal between the two Bay Area clubs as an MLB veteran goes from the Giants to the A's while a minor-league veteran heads to San Francisco. Newcomb, 30, was once a prized youngster with the Braves, debuting with 19 starts of 4.32 ERA ball as a 24-year-old in 2017. He eventually transitioned to a relief role but most recently struggled to an 8.78 ERA across 20 appearances between the Braves and Cubs a season ago. Newcomb tossed a 3.16 ERA in 31 1/3 innings with Triple-A Sacramento this season. Brooks, 28, is a career .264 hitter with 57 homers and 15 stolen bases across 571 career minor-league contests spanning parts of seven seasons.

Tue Aug 22 202312:24A's Acquire Sean Newcomb From Giants
The Oakland Athletics acquired left-hander Sean Newcomb from the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday in exchange for outfielder Trenton Brooks. The trade was allowed because neither Newcomb nor Brooks have been on a 40-man big-league roster in 2023. Newcomb has been a solid reliever at Triple-A Sacramento this year, posting a 3.16 ERA with 40 strikeouts in 31 1/3 innings pitched. The 30-year-old southpaw will now report to Triple-A Las Vegas and serve as relief depth for the rebuilding A's. Brooks, 28, has turned some heads at Vegas this year, slashing .299/.405/.529 with a .934 OPS, 16 home runs, 71 RBI, five stolen bases and 78 runs scored in 94 games. He was originally taken in the 17th round in 2016 by the Cleveland Guardians.

Thu May 26 202211:17Sean Newcomb To Make Another Rehab Outing Friday
Chicago Cubs left-hander Sean Newcomb (ankle) is scheduled to make another minor league rehab outing on Friday. Newcomb began his rehab assignment with Triple-A Iowa on Tuesday. The 28-year-old southpaw has been out for just under two weeks with a left ankle sprain, but he could be activated to the active roster after his outing on Friday, barring any setbacks. He began the season with the Atlanta Braves before being traded to the Cubs. In 8 1/3 relief innings between both teams, he's allowed seven earned runs while walking five and striking out seven in six relief appearances. Newcomb can be ignored by fantasy managers for now.

Wed Apr 20 202222:20Sean Newcomb Traded to The Cubs
The Atlanta Braves traded left-handed pitcher Sean Newcomb and cash considerations to the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday in exchange for relief pitcher Jesse Chavez. Newcomb was designated for assignment on Tuesday, and the Cubs ultimately decided to deal for the southpaw instead of losing out on him through waivers. The 28-year-old has struggled recently in his major league career but posted a 3.16 ERA, 1.32 WHIP, and a 65:29 K: BB over 68 1/3 innings in 2019. Newcomb is a speculative add in deep-league formats if he enters Chicago's rotation. Chavez will provide the Braves bullpen depth but is not on the fantasy radar in 2022.

Sat Jul 31 202114:12Orlando Arcia, Sean Newcomb Optioned To Triple-A
In order to make room for newly acquired relief pitcher Richard Rodriguez and outfielder Jorge Soler, the Atlanta Braves optioned shortstop/outfielder Orlando Arcia and pitcher Sean Newcomb to Triple-A on Saturday, the team announced on Twitter. Arcia is slashing .183/.234/.300 over 21 games between Milwaukee and Atlanta this season with two homers, one steal, 10 RBI and five runs scored. Newcomb has struggled in the majors this season with a 5.68 ERA and 1.776 WHIP, but he has also recorded a career-best 27.3 percent strikeout rate. Arcia and Newcomb were only options in deeper formats, and with this move managers can safely dump him to the waiver wire.

Wed Jun 9 202101:55Pirates' Hayes misses 1B on homer, Dodgers beat Bucs 5-3
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Ke’Bryan Hayes hastily missed first base and was called out after hitting a first-inning homer, sending Walker Buehler on his way to seven scoreless innings as the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-3 Tuesday night. The Pirates star rookie stung an opposite-field line drive in the first inning against Buehler that narrowly cleared the right-field wall, just inside the foul pole. Running hard and with his eyes on the ball, Hayes missed touching first base with his left foot by two or three inches and kept on going. Los Angeles manager Dave Roberts challenged, and umpires overturned the call after a short video review. Buehler (5-0) retired his last 13 batters and had two hits to raise his career batting average to .124. He allowed two hits, struck out two and walked one while throwing 93 pitches. Pirates rookie JT Brubaker (4-5) shut out the Dodgers through four innings but did not make it out of the fifth, when Los Angeles scored three times. Kenley Jansen... [More]

Mon Apr 19 202119:29Braves say Acuña day to day with mild abdominal strain
NEW YORK (AP) — The Atlanta Braves say Ronald Acuña Jr. had an MRI on Monday that revealed a mild abdominal strain and that the star outfielder is day to day heading into a series at Yankee Stadium beginning Tuesday. Acuña was injured in the fourth inning of Atlanta's 13-4 win over the Chicago Cubs on Sunday night. He led off the fourth inning with a walk, and pitcher Kyle Hendricks threw over a couple of times while he was on first. It looked as if Acuña did something to his midsection on a dive back to the bag. The All-Star was checked by a trainer while he was on second, but he stayed in. He got up slowly after diving home to score on Travis d’Arnaud’s sacrifice fly, and then was replaced in the field in the bottom half. Acuña is off to a terrific start this year, batting .419 with seven homers and 16 RBIs in 16 games. The outfielder also has scored a major league-high 21 runs. He was honored as the National League's player of the week Monday. The reigning NL East champions have been hit hard by injuries during a rough start to the season. Pitchers Max Fried, Drew Smyly and Sean Newcomb and outfielders Cristian Pache and Ender Inciarte have been placed on the 10-day IL since Wednesday. Atlanta plays the Yankees in the Bronx on Tuesday and Wednesday before opening a home series against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday. ___ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports
Mon Apr 19 202102:39LEADING OFF: Patriots' Day at Fenway, Twins still on pause
A look at what’s happening around the majors on today: ___ WAKE UP! The White Sox and Red Sox begin at 11:05 a.m. at Fenway Park in the annual Patriots’ Day game. Could mean early-morning batting practice for J.D Martinez and José Abreu. The event usually coincides with the Boston Marathon -- in past years, fans in the Green Monster seats would turn around to catch a glimpse of the leaders while others headed over after the final out to cheer on the runners in Kenmore Square, about a mile from the finish line. This year, the famous race has been moved to Oct. 11 due to the pandemic. Chicago ace Lucas Giolito (1-0, 2.55 ERA) is slated to start the series finale against Nathan Eovaldi (2-1, 2.08). STILL WAITING The Twins will continue coronavirus testing and contact tracing with the hope of getting back on the field Tuesday for a doubleheader at Oakland. Minnesota had games against the Angels in Anaheim on Saturday and Sunday postponed. The Twins-Athletics game Monday also was called off.... [More]
